KM888 - Lesson Beginner #1
Welcome students to the first lesson of the “Beginners” section.
You can only attend this lesson if you already took the Basic Lesson (link: https://nightshadeduelacadem.forumotion.com/t421-km888-lesson-basics) and when you did the homework from that lesson (link: https://nightshadeduelacadem.forumotion.com/t480-km888-lessons-hw-1-for-every-dorm-to-read)
In this section I’m going to teach you guys how to propperly build a deck. Impossible you might think? Well, I beg to differ.
I will go over varient aspects wich will all help you Building and constucting the deck like a pro. I already asked you guys to build a deck (depending on your dorm) and I got a good idea of how you personnaly build decks.
It could be good, it might be bad. For each person that is different and I’m not gonna talk behind your backs who made what kind of deck. Instead, lets just try to make your abilities better.
Whenever I’m building a deck I go over some sort of plan that I made in my head.
Step 1) Staples and/or Semi-staples
Step 2) Deck-Specific Cards
Step 3) Tech Choices
Step 4) Deck-Filling OR Deck-Thinning
Step 5) Extra Deck
Step 6) Adjustments in Main Deck?
Step 7) Testing
Step 8) Side Deck
When you follow these little steps, I’m pretty sure you can make yourself an awesome Deck. Today I’ll be teaching you guys about staple cards. When to put them in the Deck, when not to put them in the Deck and so on.
Reasoning behind these cards:
I’m not going to expleign the reasonings behind these cards. As stated before, these cards can be used in almost every deck because of their usefulness. Though not every deck has the room for them, or are simply able to use them.
A good example is the fact that you probably won’t play Gorz in a deck that resolves around Backrow Protection. You probably won’t have an empty field.
F.A.Q.
If you are making a Deck, why do you start with the staples?
It’s very simple. By adding the most important staples first, I know how much room I have left in the Deck. That way, I can prepare myself just that bit better.
What staples are mostly used?
That would probably be the trinity together with the MSTs. Dark Hole, Monster Reborn and Heavy Storm are Splashable in any Deck I think. Besides those, Mystical Space Typhoon will see its shine at 2 or 3 in almost any Deck.
How do I know if I took the right staples when I just started building the Deck?
Don’t worry about that yet. When your Deck is almost done (towards the end), you’ll notice if you need another staple or not. Stuff like that is mostly done at the end. We’ll teach about that in another lesson.

When you follow these little steps, I’m pretty sure you can make yourself an awesome Deck. Today I’ll be teaching you guys about staple cards. When to put them in the Deck, when not to put them in the Deck and so on.
- What are (semi-) staple cards?:
- Staple cards are cards that are practically used in each and every deck. I say practically because there are always exceptions. These cards can variate between “Monster Cards”, “Spell Cards” and “Trap Cards”. Semi-Staple cards are also splashable into most decks, but are not always recommended. A lot of these can be used as Side Deck material just because of the fact that they don’t always have good synergy with your Main Deck.
- List of Staples:
- Effect Veiler
- Maxx “C”
- Dark Hole
- Monster Reborn
- Heavy Storm
- Mystical Space Typhoon
- Bottomless Trap Hole
- Mirror Force
- Solemn Judgment
- Solemn Warning
- Torrential Tribute
- Ally of Justice Catastor
- Black Rose Dragon
- Stardust Dragon
- Scrap Dragon
- Gagaga Cowboy
- Leviair the Sea Dragon
- Maestroke the Symphony Djinn
- Number 16: Shock Master
- Number 17: Leviathan Dragon
- Number 39: Utopia
- Number 50: Blackship of Corn
- Wind-Up Zenmaines
- Effect Veiler
Reasoning behind these cards:
- Effect Veiler + Maxx “C”:
- A lot of players will agree that Effect Veiler and Maxx “C” are both heavily used cards. Though the Deck you are playing needs the room, the need and the possibility to play it.
Good examples of decks that clearly don’t play Veiler and Maxx “C” are deck that include Macro Cosmos into their Maindeck. It’s pretty hard getting of your monsters effects because of that Cosmos.
Also, decks like Dark World don’t use these cards because they don’t really care for them. First of all, DW (Dark World) has enough draw power, so there is no use for Maxx “C”, and Veiler can’t be included because Dark World needs the Deckroom for other and better cards. Also these 2 cards would be in conflict with the Hand Destuctive Power of DW. It’s a very bad idea having Veiler in hand while playing Dragged Down into the Grave, since people would just kill your Veiler.
Another reason DW doesn’t play these cards is siding. People always side stuff like Macro Cosmos against DW, so you’d suddenly have more cards that wouldn’t work. Tough luck …
Some decks like Mermail can’t run Veiler and Maxx “C” just because they need the room in their Main Deck. People will also side Macro Cosmos against this deck, so yet that same reason why you shouldn’t try Veiler and Maxx “C”.
Off course there are a lot of reasons to play these cards as well. A lot of decks have the extra room in their maindeck (Also see this in the lesson about step 4: Deck-Filling) so they can Main Veilers or Maxx “C” to boost their Deck just a little bit.
Effect Veiler counters things like Fire Fist, Rescue Rabbit, Lightsworn, Chaos Dragons, Monarchs, Synchron and so many more.
Maxx “C” on the other hand makes the opponent have a choice. Give you more cards or stop their play. When they stop their play, you basically shut them down for an additional turn. When they don’t stop but keep going, you’ll get a big advantege for next turn, but when your opponent is going for an OTK, your big hand might not matter. Be cautious for that.
- Trinity:
- Dark Hole, Monster Reborn and Heavy Storm are real powercards, also refered to as the “Trinity”. 99% of the decks you’ll encounter or make yourself will have these cards. The other 1% is simple. Some people do not run a certain card of these because of the viability of the card.
Example:- Monster Reborn might not work while playing a Macro Cosmos Deck.
- Monster Reborn might not work while playing Gravekeepers (Necrovalley).
- Dark Hole isn’t always the best card when you can Spam the field each and every turn with loads of monsters. If you also run some traps or spells to protect your field, Dark Hole might be more negative then positive.
- Heavy Storm is sometimes a bad idea. When you play loads of Continous cards, like Macro Cosmos, Dimensional Fissure, Field Spells, Equip Cards or in a deck like Fire Fist (so many spells and traps that stay on the field) Heavy Storm might be a disadvantege.
- Monster Reborn might not work while playing a Macro Cosmos Deck.
- Mystical Space Typhoon:
- Most of the decks in existance run 2 to 3 MST’s. It’s just the way to go when facing other decks. There are however a small amount of Decks that don’t choose to Maindeck these cards, just because they have enough Backrow Destruction.
DW kills Backrow in the hand with things like “Dragged Down into the Grave” or with the “Eradicator Epidemic Virus”. Also remember that “Grapha” can basically kill any card when discarded from the hand.
Harpies is another deck that often doesn’t play MST. Because of their Field Spell they can use 1 card to blow up multiple backrow cards. This is of course better then MST. They also have Icarus Attack for some more destructive power.
Keep in mind that MST can be replaced with things like Forbidden Lance or Night Beam, just because of their similar purposes.
- Trap Line-Up:
- The Trap Line-Up for a lot of Decks is the same. Bottomless Trap Hole might be 1 of the best Traps in the game. Both Mirror Force and Torrential Tribute are mass-destruction cards (just watch out for Starlight Road) and then there is the Solemn Duo, which is played by almost any deck. Paying some Life Points isn’t important as long as you know you’ll win because of it.
Keep in mind that not all Decks play all of these, and it’s a matter of what deck you’re playing, for what traps you’ll choose. Some decks don’t run any traps at all, which is of course also a decision you could make.
- Extra Deck staples:
- When you have a deck, you know you’ll probably use Synchro and/or Xyz monsters. The ones listed above are the ones with the best effects out there, while being Generic Monsters (This means, you can make them with any monsters as long as the levels are correct. A non-generic monster for example is Starliege Paladynamo who needs 2 Level 4 Light monsters).
If you are able to play them it is mostly advised you do.
- List of Semi-Staple cards:
- Battle Fader
- Gorz the Emissary of Darkness
- Neo-Spacian Grand Mole
- Snowman Eater
- Spirit Reaper
- Thunder King Rai-Oh
- Tragoedia
- Book Of Moon
- Forbidden Lance
- Mind Control
- Pot Of Avarice
- Pot Of Duality
- Call of the Haunted
- Compulsary Evacuation Device
- Dimensional Prison
- Fiendish Chain

- Mist Wurm
- T.G. Hyper Librarian
- Abyss Dweller
- Lavalval Chain
- Number 20: Giga-Briljant
- Photon Papilloperative

- Battle Fader
I’m not going to expleign the reasonings behind these cards. As stated before, these cards can be used in almost every deck because of their usefulness. Though not every deck has the room for them, or are simply able to use them.

- Spoiler:
- What is a staple card? Expleign this in your own words. ( . / 1)
- Why do you think “Pot of Duality” is a Semi-Staple? Expleign in your own words. ( . / 2)
- I have mentioned both Forbidden Lance and Night Beam when talking about Mystical Space Typhoon. Yet, people seem to use MST a lot more. Expleign why in your own words. ( . / 2)
- Underneath you can see an easy Decklist of some “anti-meta” made on DevPro. There is however 1 card, which is a semi-staple, that clearly shouldnt be used in a deck like this.
a. Name this card. ( . / 1)
b. With what staple card would you replace it with? Also say why. ( . / 2)
c. From all the trap cards that are stated above (in the staples list and the semi-staples list) there is only 1 Trap Card that isn’t in this deck. Name this card and why do you think this card isn’t in the deck? ( . / 2)
- What is a staple card? Expleign this in your own words. ( . / 1)
